The north gate found in 2011 (Area 1) suggested that buildings might line a “street” in the intervening space before the Northern Area. A square in Area 4 revealed a room which may have been one of a series of shops along the eastern front of the settlement. The walls were completely robbed out, suggesting it had been made of fine building stone. The interior had massive ash and charcoal upon a burnt surface; in this matrix were the articulated skeletons of five young goats, apparently asphyxiated in the fire. Dr. Mohammad Zawahra determined the age to be one to two years old, an age appropriate for sale in an animal market. Such a suq might seem appropriate for a relatively open area between the north gate and buildings of the Northern Area.
